How can I make sure an insurance agent or company is legitimate?

Call your state insurance department or other licensing agency and ask if the company or individual is licensed to do business. To find your state insurance department, visit the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) website. NAIC also offers the Consumer Information Source (CIS) that you can use to check insurance companies before you purchase insurance.

Licensing isn't the only thing you should be concerned with. You also want to be sure that the company is financially strong (so that it can pay its policyholders' claims) and has a good customer satisfaction record. Learn more at The Balance website.
